Arcola Theatre, 1st-5th March 2011

"Showcasing original and ambitious new writing" - British Theatre Guide

For one week only, at the Arcola’s new-found home, Word:Play 4 will be kick-starting Studio 2 with an injection of revolutionary theatre from the best new writing talent.

Following the critical, sell-out success of previous incarnations, our flagship project Word:Play will be championing the next generation of new writing with six specially-commissioned fifteen-minute plays inspired by the word “Revolution”.

Vive la revolución!

For this cycle, the playwrights are: Daniel Kanaber (Coalition at Theatre503; PLAYlist, Latitude 2010), Jacqueline McCarrick (shortlisted for Bruntwood Prize 2006), Katie McCullough (Royal Court Young Writers' Programme), Siân Owen (winner of the Oxford Playhouse New Playwriting Competition 2010), Becky Prestwich (shortlisted for the Pearson Playwright Scheme 2009) and Daniel Smith (Old Vic New Voices' transatlantic Arden Project).

Praise for previous Word:Plays:

"A consistently high standard of both writing and performance… A launchpad for top quality new talent."
British Theatre Guide

"Six plays, one sublime evening!... The word: vengeance. The result: magnificence... The cast were superb and captivating... Were it possible, I would be in the audience every night of this production. It's that good."
Remote Goat * * * * *

"One of the best collection of shorts I have seen in a long while - each one of these plays is excellent."

Half-way there! Word:Play 4 Update...

Posted on 26/01/2011

First up, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has pledged for Word:Play 4 so far, helping us reach over half of our target! We really, really appreciate your support! The full line-up of the plays, and brief synopses, can be found on the Word:Play 4 page on our website. We went for a site visit to the new Arcola Theatre today. It's incredible: a beautiful Victorian factory that has been converted into theatre spaces. We checked out the brand new Studio 2, an 80-seat black box space. It's going to be a perfect playing space for the production. We can't wait to get stuck in and bring the world of the six plays to life. You can read more about the Arcola's big move at www.futurearcola.com. We're pleased to announce our Production Team for Word:Play 4: Designer - Stephanie Williams (recent Motley graduate), Lighting Designer - Jim Bristow (Word:Play 3), Sound Designer - Mat Williams (Word:Play 2), Movement - Robin Guiver (Box of Tricks' Associate Artist) and Stage Manager - Louisa Davis (a Box of Tricks regular). A hugely creative team who will be helping us realise the production! We have auditions next week. The line-up is looking strong and both of us are really looking forward to seeing the plays come off the page and to finding the perfect cast and company. We'll keep you posted with the cast when announced... In the mean time, please can you help us to keep plugging our WeFund campaign. Tell anyone you think might be interested in getting involved: blog, tweet, e-mail, Facebook, Skype, or even tell them face-to-face! Thank you. Vive la revolución! Adam and Hannah Box of Tricks Theatre p.s. Tickets are now on sale at www.arcolatheatre.com.

Ringing in the new...

Posted on 10/01/2011

Happy New Year! With seven weeks to go until Word:Play 4 at the Arcola, and 2011 well underway at Box of Tricks' Towers, we are delighted to have already reached over a third of our WeFund target. We'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the funders who have pledged money so far... First drafts of the six pieces are in. We have a hugely exciting mix of plays - with wildly contrasting interpretations of the word of inspiration, "Revolution". We'll say no more for now, but watch this space... We're in the process of finalising the creative team and putting out a casting call. Rehearsals begin next month - on Valentine's Day - and we can't wait! We may have reached 34% of our target, but that means we still have 66% to find. So, please please please help us keep our foot on the pedal by spreading the good word via Twitter, Facebook, e-mails and good old-fashioned word of mouth. If we can harness the power of the internet, we can work together to stage the next generation of new writing. Be sure to check out our website at www.boxoftrickstheatre.co.uk. Thanks for your support. Best wishes, Adam and Hannah Box of Tricks
