'What's it like?' is an ongoing project attempting to uncover what a single person or community feels about their home town/ village/ space without me actually being there.
Seeing if the media's depictions of a place are accurate or completely misguided, and really trying to understand just a small fraction of the surrounding community as realised by the people within it.
The project aims to include anyone who wishes to be involved with art but doesn't necessarily have the time, experience or confidence to start his or her own project.
The initial spark for this project came from realizing that many Reading University students don't realize that the Fine Art department holds new and exciting exhibitions every week, I’m attempting to change this within and outside of the university with 'What's It Like?’. Giving everyone the opportunity to experience his or her name within an artist book and an arts exhibition. Volume One of the book is available online to buy or browse at: www.whatsitlikeproject.com
A collaborative exhibition that I was involved with had already created a buzz around the studios in late last year; people were coming up to me and exclaiming that they couldn't believe there were non-art students at the private view. This is what I want to see more of.
I will be applying 'What's It Like' project to present it as my finalist exhibition and to The New Contemporaries exhibition. As I am dedicated to providing an opportunity for everyone to feel proud about showing their work in an exhibition, with themselves as the artist, when they might never thought that was possible.
Any money raised will go towards the ultimate goal of showing these submissions in exhibitions.
I am currently showing this project in an exhibition in Wokingham and have the second lined up in Earley, Reading.
The money would go towards: Printing, Frames, Gallery Costs, Petrol, Website Costs etc
Please visit the website for examples of submissions so far:
