A SPOKEN WORD DANCE THEATRE PERFORMANCE
This Performance is a story, I will be the storyteller. Speaking in Inuktitut the Inuit language I will recite an old Inuit folk story.
‘numiqtuqunipkaaq, unipkaaqtuq. Uqaqtuq Inuktitut unipkaaqtuq’
It can be said and observed that at some point in our lives we have felt like we are existing in some kind of desert, regardless of the place in which we physically exist. It is interesting to me that, physical geography and psychological geography can sometimes be startlingly different. The expanse of time and space resolves around a questioning of place and the destabilisation of place. The fracture of place, both physically and emotionally is dramatic. I am attracted to the Arctic desert, a nothingness, a loneliness, a barrenness and yet none of this is true as that desert is complete in itself, it is 'we' who on arriving into the desert are not complete.
I have chosen to use the Inuit Language because of its unique rythmical properties and strong ties to the Arctic culture, landscape and desert.
This work is an artificial construct of the desolate tract, I will become fractured through exploring the relationship between my physicality and vocal exploration of the Inuit Language. My body will translate that experience, what and who I will become is unknown to me, until I have that experience.
The performance is experiential, a cross-cultural exploration of communication and translation.
As a an artist/choreographer and performer what excites me about creating work for people, is facilitating a visceral, immediate experience on the body and on the mind that may end when the performance ends or they might take those senses and feelings along with them personally, socially or artistically.
It is important for me to push the concepts of my artistic form, so that people can experience something that they might never have experienced or seen before. To create new sensibilities of the genre within which I work, to express my own personal voice and to encourage others to do the same, which Is why along with this project I will be running workshops.
I will be using the funds to produce the project which will include hiring a venue, marketing and publicity, expenses, costuming, artist fee's and everything I will need to make this production possible.
