Set in Motherwell, South Africa, 'The Three' explores what it means to live in an environment where crime and drug addiction are the norm. The plays follows brothers Lefu and Mpo, and their friend Bulelani and examines the difficult choices they are forced to make as they are catapulted on a journey which will test the meaning of love, friendship and loyalty.
We have been working on this idea for just under a year with the hopes of taking the finished piece to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival 2011 http://www.nafest.co.za/. Resources are extremely limited, especially where these guys come from in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and it has proven difficult to the full amount needed, so we are trying to fundraise the full amount so that we can take the piece to the festival! There are so many incredibly talented people in the townships, but it is so difficult for them to get their work seen outside of their communities. It is such a huge shame that their voices arent often heard and their talent not seen and we are hoping that by taking this play to the festival that it will give us a platform to do that.
The stories within the piece are mostly inspired by true stories I have heard whilst on my journey's through the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. A lot of them taken from my good friends who will be performing the piece. These guys have showed me some of the best times I have ever had and taught me important lessons which I will take with me wherever I go. I hope to give them something back in return for the invaluable experiences they have given me. I have never known people be so generous with the so little that they have got and have a constant smile when others would think there was nothing to smile about.
