The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
Directed by Robin Norton-Hale
Designed by Cherry Truluck
Southwark Playhouse
Shakespeare's feistiest comedy is relocated to 21st century London. Brixton girl Kate has no time for smooth-talking Sloane Petruchio, but her traditional father thinks he's perfect.
In the ensuing battle of the sexes, Petruchio's arrogance and Kate's carefully constructed aggression crumble as they discover there's more to love than sharing the same postcode.
A fresh, contemporary retelling of The Taming of the Shrew from the director of the Olivier award winning, La Boheme (Soho Theatre).
La Boheme,
“One of the most ingenious stagings ever devised” New York Times
“Madly brilliant... an updated, zingy translation... a fresh rediscovery." The Times ****
In an effort to embrace the young people of Southwark, we have invited 30 children from every primary/secondary school in Southwark and Lambeth to see the play and participate in a workshop about it, all for free.
Some of these schools have the highest percentages of children eligible for free school meals in the UK – over 25% and 22% at the primary and secondary schools respectively, compared to the national average of 13% (London’s Poverty Profile) Eight dedicated school matinees will mean 1200 children from 40 schools will see the production at no cost to themselves. For many of these children, The Taming of the Shrew will be their first theatrical experience.
The realisation of this production will be instrumental in Natalie Macaluso Productions (NMP) becoming an established production house. Paying for the services of artists is of the utmost importance to me and with 7 members of the production team and 9 actors, wages make up over 80% of the budget.
NMP want people to view art as an investment, not an expense. By investing in this production, NMP believe it will not only enrich the lives of the audience that participate, but will also enhance the careers of all the young professional practitioners working within it.
