Bicycles shouldn't get stolen
because they just are so much more than means of transport.
...and it feels really sad to lose one.
However, they do get stolen.
Almost a hundred bicycles are stolen or damaged by organized gangs
in London every day.
In recent years the Metropolitan police has been putting a lot of effort in tackling the issue,
nevertheless only about 5% of stolen bicycles get returned to their owners.
Even in a city of 10 000 cctv cameras somebody still can easily take your things
and most likely get away with that.
Besides being a cyclist I am also a design student at Central Saint Martins and I am currently working on a project to develop a cheap and easy to make DIY tracking solution for cyclists.
At this stage of the project I need to test out the design in real life situations.
I am rising 350 pounds to build a GPS trackable bicycle.
In exchange for support I am offering to clean up London from few bicycle thieves. Getting a couple of thieves in trouble might not make a big difference but since many of those guys are professionals, stealing on average ten bikes per week - this might actually save disappointing moments to considerable amount of Londoners
I will be using the money to buy an inexpensive but steal worthy looking bicycle, second hand GPS enabled cell phone and few cheap cable locks.
I will observe until the bicycle gets stolen, film it, track it and submit the evidence to the police - this way it is very likely that thieves will actually get prosecuted.
I believe that catching bicycle thieves might turn out to be quite an exciting adventure so I will post all the actions on a video blog.
I need to carry out the experiment three or four times - and after that - If the bicycle is successfully recovered - I will give it away to one of the supporters in a raffle draw. So yes - you can possibly win a bike by supporting me:)
