Artes Escénicas Rayuela, A.C. and the Silver Lining Theatre Company are collaborating on the UK premiere of Argentinian playwright Griselda Gambaro’s masterpiece, 'Siamese Twins' at the Theatro Technis.
'Siamese Twins' is one of Griselda Gambaro’s early masterpieces and Gwen Mackeith’s translation captures the powerful black humour and harrowing metaphors. First performed in 1967, this is an early, yet startling brilliant, work by the internationally acclaimed playwright.
At the centre of 'Siamese Twins' are Lorenzo and Ignacio, twins who form the well-known archetypes of Cain and Abel. One brother’s envy leads him to subject his more successful and independent twin to cruelty and to torture, and finally to conspire in bringing about his murder. Written against the backdrop of Argentina’s Dirty Wars, the play offers an unsettling look at oppression in society through dark comedy and grotesque characters.
This dynamic and highly physical production marks the first professional staging in English of Gambaro’s grotesque tragi-comedy. Gambaro has been described as ‘one of the most important playwrights of the 20th century’ (Catherine Boyle, King’s College London) and 'without doubt, one of the most innovative and powerful writers in the world today’ (Diana Taylor, NYU). This production of Siamese Twins represents the culminating production of Out of the Wings, a three-year major AHRC-funded initiative at King’s College London, Oxford University and Queen’s University Belfast to bring new Spanish theatre translations to the British stage.
Creative Team: Mara Lockowand and Jorge Perez Falconi (directors), Kostas Panagiotou (composer), Karen Quigley (lightening designer), Sylwia Dobkoska (costume and set designer).
