Ships of Sand: An eclectic bunch of misfits stranded on a fantastical island struggle to survive. A playful, savage adventure for anyone who has ever felt at odds with, or simply confused by, the world around them.
All 8 members of Lyrebird trained at the Lecoq-based London International School of Performing Arts, where we learned to create theatre collaboratively. For each of us this was a profoundly joyous and deeply agonizing journey, the soul of which we would like to share with you in the form of 'Ships of Sand'. 'Ships of Sand' is a survival story in the vein of 'Lords of the Flies', where a bunch of misfits find themselves forced by circumstance to live together on an island. Stripped of the routines and comforts of civilization, they must accept each other if they want to survive. We will be living this journey ourselves as we work, rehearsing with the entire company living and working together under one roof!
'Ships of Sand' will be performed at Venue 13 for the entirety of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We are asking you for money to help us with our travel, venue, and accommodation expenses for the 8 company members for the festival month. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. Some of our donation gifts are place-specific, but since we have such a far-ranging network of friends and family we would be happy to find a suitable alternative if you are not able to be visit Edinburgh or London.
Lyrebird is a devised theatre company based in London, formed by graduates from the Lecoq-based London International School of Performing Arts. We come from England, Denmark, Greece, Argentina, USA, and India, and thus each member brings a different cultural background to the work. Though we have been working together for the past two years in school, 'Ships of Sand' is our first full work as a company outside of school. We sincerely hope that this is the beginning of a long creative partnership and that the Lyrebird Theatre Company will continue far beyond this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Be a part of laying the groundwork for something wonderful! For more information about us, please check out our blog: http://lyrebirdtheatre.tumblr.com/
