RICHARD III, Tower of London, 1st & 2nd April 2011
Love&Madness presents Shakespeare's RICHARD III at the Tower of London for two nights only. After six months of touring the UK and Ireland, we want to perform our critically-acclaimed, sell-out production at the historic royal palace where the events of the play actually took place.
Richard III presents the life of one of the most diabolically manipulative, yet charming and witty villains that Shakespeare ever wrote. Embittered by his own physical deformities the power-hungry Richard stops at nothing to gain control of the crown, seducing and murdering his way to the top.
The £9500 we raise will go towards the hire of the venue, seating, lighting and sound equipment to allow us to create a one-off performance space in one of England's most atmospheric historic buildings. If we are blessed enough to surpass this goal we will be able to put the show on for extra nights, allowing more people to share in the experience.
Here are some of the comments that critics have made about Ben Kidd's sell-out production:
"comes across as clearly as one of the great English stories should." Benedict Nightingale, The Times
"Kidd's modern-dress production, played out on a bare stage except for a large table that doubles as a coffin and boardroom-style desk... understands the cut and thrust of political intrigue... it certainly grabs you by the scruff of the neck." - Lyn Gardner
"Director Ben Kidd and his team present a fast-paced and thoughtful production... A brave, new and welcome addition to the cycle of Richard III productions" British Theatre Guide
