Our philosophy is that Art is out there…and we are willing to find it. Why promote the already promoted? It is more exciting to find the new the up and coming.
Who we are:
We are Laura Lepp and Jenny Judova we are both 3rd year Master of Arts Honors students at the University of Glasgow. This is our second project the working name of which is “Operation Exhibition” a reminiscent of the legendary Soviet comedy “Operation Y”. We have collaborated before on an exhibition “The Cabinet of Curiosities” which was done in partnership with Volume Black contemporary art gallery NYC and showed the works of recent Glasgow school of art graduates. For more information on the show visit: http://www.volumeblack.com/Main/C%20Curiosities/thecabinetofcuri.html
Our proposal:
Concept
Our project would take place in Glasgow (Scotland) at the end of April, for 5 – 7 days. The exhibition will show the works of young and aspiring photographers from ex-soviet countries. Conceptually, we want to exhibit two opposing sides of contemporary life in Eastern Europe , on one hand the glamorous western life-style which has been adapted by the younger ambitious generation; versus the deprived reality of some social groups in the post-Soviet era. But, we would like to present the exhibition in artistic dimensions instead of the documentary. Firstly, glamorous editorial-like figures with an artsy fairy-tale-like twist, and secondly, naturalistic captivating portraits or city-scapes of the downside of urban/rural society. This would create a contrast of "gray real-life in a glossy packaging" effect, which is the message that the viewers are encouraged to contemplate on.
Why we are doing this:
Reason 1
We want to contribute to of the artistic dialogue between the East and the West
Reason 2
The exhibition would be enjoyable for various age- and target-groups. For art and photography students it can be inspirational and educating, for all the Eastern European and Russian students and residents there is nostalgia and the reminder of home, for people interested in the cultural and historical side we will provide intriguing information and we will ask specialists in that field (eg. history, photography, contemporary art , fashion, social issues) to combine short interesting texts so that besides the captivating and exhilarating photos there will also be a lot to discover about the countries represented!
