The Play
It was Owen's meeting of Sassoon that helped develop him into the voice of a lost generation and Not About Heroes, through it's sensitive study of their conversations, letters and Sassoon’s memoirs helps us to understand the impact these two great men had on each other.
Written by Stephen MacDonald in the early 1980's and rarely performed since it's production at the National Theatre in 1986, Not About Heroes is a beautifully realised piece exploring the relationship of the great war poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen during the final year of World War One and the impact that trench warfare had on their work.
Spartan Dogs will breathe new life into this rarely performed piece at the Lion & Unicorn theatre in Kentish Town, London.
The project is affiliated with The Royal British Legion & Help for Heroes with a percentage of all profits being split between the two charities to support those in our armed forces and their families.
Spartan Dogs will also host a Poetry Reading to mark Remembrance Day on November 13th; with guest readings from several well-loved British actors. 100% of the profits from this event will be donated to the affiliate charities.
The Company
Spartan Dogs started life in 2010 after a successful Launch event supported by patrons Larry Lamb & Dexter Fletcher. With the first two productions, The Devil is an Ass & Nine garnering much critical praise the company continues to go from strength to strength. Spartan Dogs member Emily White also received a Best Actress nomination at the Off West-End Awards for her performance in Nine
Spawned from a group of established jobbing actors who wanted to create opportunities for themselves the aim of the company is to not only create work for those founding members, but also for the industry at large. ‘Spartans’, as we have affectionately become known, strive to powerfully engage with the industry and encourage growth and progress amongst both the established and emerging talent that sustains the arts sector and highly reputable cultural integrity of the UK.
Above all, the Spartan focus is creating innovative, thought provoking work that audiences engage with and that the those involved find challenging and enjoyable.
Not About Heroes is being presented in association with Giant Olive Theatre Company.
