Who we are

Flying Cloud is an international collective of artists dedicated to intrepid storytelling. From our North Yorkshire base, we seek to challenge theatrical status quo and live up to our name sake – a 19th Century clipper ship that pioneered linking up the world in previously unimaginable ways. Our quest is to excite, entertain, touch and change lives with theatre and outreach. Flying Cloud Theatre promotes cultural exchange and adventurous communication that brings about understanding and enrichment of our lives.

The work

NAPOLI is an innovative show, evoking a playing style infused with the technicoloured magic of Neapolitan washing lines.

Based on the writer’s own experience in Italy and Yorkshire that of her grandparents, who met in Naples during the Second World War, NAPOLI is performed by the Flying Cloud ensemble, fusing movement, original music and new writing. The play has been developed in English and Italian, it’s aim being theatre that crosses borders and boundaries – geographic and artistic.

Turtle Keys Arts and Flying Cloud believe making education and participation a central part of any project. NAPOLI will involve cross generational groups from Yorkshire and Naples in workshops to explore subjects of identity, cultural exchange and ways to tell their own stories using the music and physical language of the play. Participants from both countries will also make links with each other through a dedicated Facebook group.

How ‘We Fund’ funds will be used

Everything raised will go directly into the show’s budget for lighting, costume, set and so we can pay our lovely actors! Your donation will help us get our show on the road and launch our education programme. We are applying to The Arts Council who supported the development of the play at West Yorkshire Playhouse and if you can help us raise £5000 or more our application is even more likely to be succesful! Even those individual ten pounds donations are like soap flakes that can quickly lather-up to create a bubbly-avalanche of funding support.     You help with: our punchy publicity campaign to reach far and wide so that everyone can enjoy a spot of sunny inspiration.

    You receive: all the above, a free ticket to the show and a special backstage tour to meet the wonderful cast.

    San Gennaro: You are our Patron Saint.

    You help with: a day of rehearsal room, maybe that will be the day when your saintly patronage creates divine inspiration and something incredible comes out of rehearsing.

    You receive: all the above plus two tickets to the show, free interval drinks with our charming director and producer.

    Bernini: You are sculpting a piece of history.

    You help with: this pays an actor’s wage for a week. Even Bernini needed to pay his rent!

    You receive: all the above plus a customized Flying Cloud workshop and a signed poster (which may be worth as much as a Bernini sculpture in a few year’s time).

    Sofia Loren- Your mega-watt stella status lights up our world.

    You help with: the lighting. Of course.

    You receive: all the above plus an invite to Napoli’s premiere, to our sparkling after show party... and due baci from us all.

  7. Pledge £1000000 or more

    Zeus- you will be crowned ‘God of Benefactors’

    You help with: Napoli, the Feature Film starring Sofia Loren.

    You will be carried on a throne over the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere. A new movement will be created in your name, we will dedicate a shrine in our Warner Brother’s studio to you.
