What we’re doing
We’re taking two new shows about love, sex and the internet by award-winning playwright Jonathan Brittain to the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
We will be performing the shows at The Pleasance Courtyard, one of the best venues in Edinburgh. We’ve also got some excellent actors involved, and we believe in putting them up and paying them a decent wage.
Phillipa and Will are Now in a Relationship is an age-old boy-meets-girl love story with a twist: it’s told entirely through a couple’s Facebook wall-to-wall. WARNING: Contains excessive poking. “Perfect.” - Brighton Argus.
The Sexual Awakening of Peter Mayo is a new comedy about the secret side of internet dating. Join Peter, the man who found about the birds and the bees from an episode of Thunderbirds, as he learns about no strings attached sex, and all the strings that come with it.
What we’re after
Both shows are scheduled to run at The Pleasance Courtyard (Phillipa and Will in the Attic and Peter Mayo in the Beside) for the whole of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We are looking for donors to contribute £2000 toward actors’ fees and accommodation. You’ll find a list of rewards for each pledge on the right hand side. Anything you can spare is a great help to us, and we'd like to say thank you in advance.
Who we are
Misshapen Theatre was founded in 2010 by playwright Jonathan Brittain, producer Lucy Jackson and publicist Jack Swain, following the successful run of Brittain’s Edinburgh debut The Wake (check it out on our website).
If you'd like to see how rehearsals are going, follow us on Twitter - @misshapen_arts. To read about our shows check out our website, www.misshapentheatre.com, or feel free to get in touch with us at misshapentheatre@gmail.com for any other info.
Why we’re doing it
Apart from the fact that we love the Fringe, we reckon our shows are that rare commodity: intelligent and entertaining. In fact, that’s our entire approach to theatre. Of course we want you the audience to have a good time, but we also want to give you some food for thought about a particular issue – in this case, how has love and sex been affected by the online revolution?
Chances are you’re linked to at least one social networking site, and the way you conduct your personal relationships has probably changed as a result. Are you the same person online as you are offline? Do the same rules of etiquette apply to both worlds? Is someone a pervert because they look for sex online? We want to explore all these questions as truthfully as possible, and provide lots of laughs along the way.
Why you should care
Unless you’ve been hiding away in a dark hole, you know about the arts cuts. Gaining funding for new theatre has never been harder, which is why it falls on you, lovely reader, to lend a helping hand. If you value the arts as much as we do, if you think theatre is important not just for a fun night out, but as a reflection of the issues affecting people in the world today, now is the time to act.
We’re all Fringe veterans, and we’ve honestly never been as excited about a project there as we are about this one. We’ve been writing, researching and workshopping both shows extensively for the last six months, and we’re incredibly proud of the results. We'd be honoured if you chose to donate.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
