Adventurous theatre for playful people, 5th – 15th May 2011

Mayfest is Bristol’s unique annual festival of contemporary theatre. We are dedicated to presenting a broad range of unusual, playful and ambitious work from leading theatre makers from Bristol, the UK and beyond. Mayfest is rapidly making a name for itself as one of the top events in the UK theatre calendar and demonstrates Bristol’s vibrancy and willingness to experiment and play.

Mayfest relies on the generosity and support of lots of different people and organisations in order to make ends meet. We are a small team with a big appetite to make extraordinary things happen. With Mayfest 2011 almost upon us and with the economic climate as it is, we still have a significant hole in our budget, which we need to fill to make sure the festival can go ahead in the way it deserves to. We are looking for £4000 to make this year’s exciting festival programme a reality. Amongst other things this investment will go directly towards ensuring our artists are paid properly to be here, to support us to increase the reach of our events to an ever growing audience, and to help facilitate a range of cost-free events such as discussions, parties and other playful opportunities to bring people together.

Mayfest is produced in collaboration with Bristol Old Vic and works in partnership with other key arts venues across Bristol to present performances in both established theatre spaces and non-theatre spaces all over the city. It is produced by MAYK, the producing partnership of Kate Yedigaroff and Matthew Austin and receives some funding from Arts Council England.

PRAISE FOR MAYFEST:

“A pulse-racing programme of work ranging that offers fledgling local companies cheek by jowl with artists of international reputation.” (Lyn Gardner, The Guardian, 2010).

We've just added another £40 to our campaign, thanks to donations from Stephen Prime and Paul Durdey that came directly to us, rather than through PayPal. We're now on 30%, which is fantastic, but we have around 3 weeks to go and an awful long way to go. Please continue sharing the campaign and encouraging people to give generously. We really need your support! In other news, most of our shows are now online for you to peruse - check out www.mayfestbristol.co.uk.

Just to make sure...

...that everyone realises that the existing pledges that come from 'Mayfest Bristol' are not from the Mayfest team directly. Rather these donations have come from people via cheque and/or another wonderful means of donation that is not PayPal. Please keep up the support - and check out our website for the latest information on what Mayfest 2011 has in store. We are all rather excited!

Brochures and Shows

Posted on 22/03/2011

Mayfest 2011 creeps closer every day. In fact, at the moment, it's creeping more quickly than our fundraising on WeFund. Since we last spoke we've been busy designing the festival brochure. It's always a big job, producing thousands of little booklets, and making sure it looks nice, has all the correct information on it, and you've removed all those notes you write like 'MOVE THIS SECTION' etc etc. Anyway, we're getting there, and it'll be in our sticky little paws by the beginning of April. Producing brochures is really expensive. We have to print loads, and they eat up nearly all of our tiny marketing budget. Your WeFund contributions will help us cover the costs of printing banners, flyers, posters and other bits of stuff we need to make to let people know about what we're doing this year. In other news, some of our shows are now up on our website, and there'll be more by the end of this week. They include: Ousia by Darren Johnston, is an incredible dance piece which Kate saw in Edinburgh in 2009. For Mayfest, Darren is presenting a new version of the piece, created specially for Arnolfini's auditorium, and featuring music from Warp Records artists. We're hearing exciting things about Sylvia Rimat's SPILL Festival Commission, ...I Guess If The Stage Exploded, which we can't share with you just yet, but the piece is an attempt to make a show that every single audience member will never forget. Greg McLaren is resident in Bristol this week, making his show Doris Day Can F**k Off, which will be showing as part of Mayfest. We've been given some stickers by Greg, which are, quite frankly, brilliant. Find out more at www.ddfo.tv or on twitter.com/ddfo Finally, have a look at this - www.fortnightproject.com We're very excited. Please keep forwarding this campaign to everyone you know, and donate if you haven't already. We need every penny we can get!

The blackboard of targets

Posted on 15/03/2011

We're sitting in the Mayfest office on College Green in central Bristol. It's above an empty shop and is lent to us by Bristol City Council for free as part of their brilliant scheme of offering arts organisations use of empty buildings. Our desk is a trestle table pinched from Bristol Old Vic. The wall we face was painted black by the previous tenants, and we're using it as a blackboard to scribble down ideas for the festival. At the moment it is covered in names, groups and websites to target for our wefund campaign. We've even drawn a little Blue Peter style counter where we're chalking up our progress. It's hard work, this fundraising lark. We're learning quickly that the key to success is a constant stream of near-bullying of friends, colleagues and people you've never met before. And we're trying combine this with organising a festival in a few weeks time. So what's happened since we uploaded the project? 1. We've been bowled over by the support we've received in just one week - although we still need MORE people to donate. 2. We've been plotting our free opening party at Bristol Old Vic on Thursday 5 May 3. We've announced our first commission with Theatre Bristol - a two-week semaphore soap opera called Saved Me by Bristol-based company Search Party. 4. We've updated our rewards: the photographer Bex Wade, who took some beautiful photos of our venues last year offered a print of one of the photos for anyone who donates over £250. 5. We've developed the concept for the Basement theatre at Bristol Old Vic, which will become a late-night cabaret venue during the festival 6. We've *almost* finalised the programme 7. We've eaten 1 packet of Viennese fingers, 1 packet of Hob Nobs, 1 bag of fruit pastels, 5 bananas, 6 apples, some apricots, a bag of giant chocolate buttons, some cashew nuts, 1 packet of Thorton's Millionaire Shortbread, some skittles sours, lots of tea and coffee, until George broke the kettle. 8. We've been cooking up some exciting plans for our participation programme with Theatre Bristol. The list goes on... Please, please keep on circulating this project to your friends, family and colleagues. We really need to meet our target, and we haven't got long to do it! Over and out Team Mayfest
