The Mary Anning Project is a project with two threads: a touring play - The Cabinet Maker's Daughter a 19th C story of love, dinosaur discovery, and achievement against odds - the life of Mary Anning, the Lyme Regis Fossil Hunter and of first female palaeontologists. The second is an interactive performance called ‘Mary Anning’s Fossil Depot’ led by ‘Mary Anning’ herself, as part of ‘Jurassic Creatures’, which consists of performance, participatory drama and painting workshops (with Fossil Fun for Kids)aimed at primary schools.
The touring play will be delivered from May-November 2012. The School's project from March - Dec 2012 It is anticipated that the launch will take place in the Dorset County Museum. The overall project aims to reach a target audience of 5,000. Working in partnership with: schools, Dorset County Museum and theatres throughout Wessex
As One Theatre’s 'The Cabinet Maker's Daughter’ and Mary Anning's Depot is theatre which aims to entertain, educate, motivate and inspire rural communities in the south west to explore the Jurassic coast through interactive performance. Working in theatres, schools, museums and village halls, these theatre projects will bring our heritage to life and raise Dorset's 2012 profile. Our vision is to form education, arts and tourism partnerships to enrich the Olympic experience for visitors. The Mary Anning story of struggle and achievements reflects and highlights the Olympic and Paralympic values:
Olympic Values:
• friendship
• respect
• excellence
Paralympic Values
• equality
• courage
• determination
• inspiration
Funding will enable the project to be offered at a subsidised rate for schools.
Evaluations will be carried out ranging from simple forms distributed pre-show at venues through to video interviews or recordings post shows or workshops, face-to-face discussions and the use of social media to gather Audience numbers; audience, student and teacher feedback? Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn will also be used for marketing and forum discussions.
The people of Dorset will benefit from this project by increased awareness and enjoyment of their local heritage and history in a fresh and entertaining way. In addition, they will be participating and engaging with theatres & artists thus generating more interest in local creative industries. It is hoped that this project will create further employment and other opportunities for those Dorset artists involved.
This project will take advantage (collaborate and partner with organisers and promotors to target) the increased number of visitors to Dorset for the water sports during the period of London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. An integrated marketing campaign will be in place to promote the production at key tourist venues across West Dorset.
