Madame Wang is a Quarterly Arts journal dedicated to dispersed collaboration, co-action and Post-human writing programmes. It embraces, engages and critiques all that is multiple, data intelligent and severally located.

In order to continue to build on the fantastic response to our first edition, we are inviting sponsors to join us in bringing this second issue to print. All the money raised will go towards the publication cost of the magazine. Everyone involved in Madame Wang from the writers and artists to the editors has given their time freely in support of the magazine’s objectives.

We commission professional writers as well as artists exploring the inherent possibilities of working together to write for the magazine. Madame Wang is open and critical as well as poetic, and will become an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the dynamic possibilities and occasional weaknesses of togetherness.

We believe the magazine has the voice and vision to carve itself a long-term place among the great artists magazines. We are professional yet flexible and attuned to the expression of new debates and findings in and among the fast growing international community of collaborative artists, architects and commentators.

By helping us to fund this next issue and increasing the awareness of this project, we will be able to take a large step towards reaching our goal of being self-sufficient and to be able to publish more texts and projects.

And now we begin

Posted on 12/10/2011

We have perhaps not given ourselves a whole heap of time to raise up a Megellan bounty for issue II, but rest assured we shall find a way. Beyond the search for publishing support, texts are being proofed, late submissions (one from me) are being hurried, and pages are being laid out. Tomorrow I leave for London to meet with Craig Cooper and discuss progress, and to have a look in on some of the events planned over Frieze. We just got Nick Carr's submission in; it's going to be a great issue.

Strategy Rooms

Posted on 30/09/2011

As part of the attempt to generate new writing methods, John Colenbrander & Friederike Hamann setup a strategy room mimicking 80's business tactical boardrooms. The whole room was furnished with colour-coded slips of paper announcing new concepts and slogans that will become the core of the Madame Wang Self Assessment vocabulary. This approach to text has resonance with the roots of poetry in political rhetoric. There is poetry in jargon, catchphrases, and tech-speak as well as the exploded three-dimensional process of organising ideas through a room.

Self Assessment

Posted on 30/09/2011

This summer as part of an experiment in horizontal approaches to the construction of Madame Wang, writers, artists and curators were invited to Treignac Projet, France to spend a week together working on the magazine. Contributors from Berlin, Rotterdam, London and Saint Paolo met, many for the first time, to discuss and develop the content and structure of Issue 2. This process is surprisingly effective in opening up the creative process, encouraging experimentation and group writing, and for extending the close relationship that often exists between editors and writers right across the board. The isolation of the French countryside coupled with living and working together make for very fast evolution of ideas. Intense conversations, brainstorming, video projects and good old-fashioned cooking and eating together all add to an atmosphere of creative generosity. Participants from New International School, AESD and July Video Coalition were well used to the hothouse environment bringing with them their experience of group projects and making converts of us all.
