At Baz, we want to make theatre that holds the tension and power of a sporting event.
We see the focus of a highly trained athlete single-mindedly using every inch of their training to reach their goal. We see the fans of all ages that passionately support, defend and adore their teams. We understand that years of work and investment have gone into that one chance at going for gold. Yet in the theatre it is assumed that a couple of week’s rehearsal with an often unpaid company will satisfy an audience who hopefully won’t expect too much.
We want to put a well trained team into a space, and watch them stay in the moment to play the ‘game’ out to the finish. To empower the audience to actively engage in the event. We train our actors to stay present and open; to be the bravest part of themselves, to fully use their voices, their bodies, and to trust their impulses. Baz wants its audience to be part of a unique event, exploding with the energy and passion of a championship final.
The continued cuts to arts funding means that independent theatre companies are finding it impossible to experiment; forced to ‘play it safe’ in the hope of occasionally breaking even. And yet, despite the lack of companies financially able to take risks, audiences are desperate to seek out exciting work.
Baz is producing Macbeth next year in London for 3 weeks, and we will be there for that audience who is seeking something alive and limitless. However we can not do this without your support. But firstly we’d like to invite you to join us to celebrate our launch at The Rag Factory on Friday 28th January. To be part of this night and share in our excitement please make a minimum donation of £5 for a ticket, include your name and come along where you’ll be signed off at the door. Ticket prices are £7 on the door.
We are truly excited by where we are going and what we are doing. We would be honoured and indebted if you would consider being a part of it.
