OUR VISION FOR THE PRODUCTION
An urban musical utilising string quartet on one side of the stage, a live DJ on the other, soundtracking an urban drama on the scale of a Greek tragedy, culminating with the two main characters spittin' lyrics over Mozart's Requiem; extolling forgiveness over revenge. The DJ provides tailored beats while different characters spit their lyrics, and the classical musicians play as the main protagonist secretly soundtracks his urban world with symphonies and concertos through his headphones.
The show will run during Edinburgh Fringe 2011, and in extended form in London afterwards.
The story follows two teenage photography students as they form a powerful friendship across the divide of two real life warring North London housing estates called The Mozart Estate and the South Kilburn estate, where your postcode can both define and kill you.
Exploring issues of friendship, stifling expectations, social exclusion, and the pressure for revenge, Lost in Mozart carries an ultimately hopeful message. The climactic scenes bring the Grime beats of the DJ together with the majestic soundtrack of Mozart's Requiem, while the two main characters rap about how defining yourself by a postcode only enslaves, and forgiveness takes more courage than revenge.
WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT ON?
Two runs of Lost In Mozart:
- at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011 from 5-28 August at a wonderful 60 seat theatre within The Carlton Hotel (invaded for the Fringe by theSpaces on North Bridge venue 36, directly off the Royal Mile).
- In a London Theatre either late 2011 or early 2012, in an extended form.
Venue hire and accommodation are the greatest costs and they are what will be making us very poor this year if we don't find funding through WeFund. Also, if we are not able to raise the finding then we won't be able to pay our performers a bean beyond providing a cold hard floor to sleep on. We'd really really like to be able to show them our appreciation by paying them a small wage.
Other than that, it's props and materials, insurance, travel, musical licenses etc. If anybody would like to see a copy of our budget before pledging support then please just drop us a line.
We know we're putting together something special, we would really value your support in helping us to make it happen.
