A piece of new writing that Dream Epic and Salida theatre companies are taking to the Edinburgh fringe this summer, 'Gutter Junky' is a raw impassioned poetic play about a young english writer, Harry, who travels to a country on the brink of civil war, addicted to the adrenalin rush of 'doing something good' Harry's actions have catastrophic consequences that will resonate for years to come.
Written by David Kantounas and directed by Fiona Clift; in a no decor production, we want the rhythmic language and physical performances to bring alive this tense exciting and addictive world. We have three actors, a beautiful score of music and an incredibly exciting script. Dream Epic and Salida productions have joined together so that an ensemble of 3 actors and a director can create the world of this play.
The boldness of the play's linguistic style, the wit and intelligence of its political stance on how we romanticise the needs and struggles of cultures outside of our own understanding, and the terrifying implication that those who write about such things, can have their liberal logic twisted to justify horrendous totallitarian actions: is a play that has to be performed. It is completely original and incredibly relevant to our relationship to foreign political revolution, despite being written over two years ago.
Fiona has been working with David on this script in various research and development workshops and readings over the past months and years. We have collaborated with incredibly talented, enthusiastic and generous performers and theatre artists, including Benedict Cumberbatch, who have moulded and shaped the script to the point where it is now being performed at Assembly Hall this summer. With the help and support of incredibly generous people we have got the play this far, and now we need to raise a final amount of money to ensure we can pay our performers and run rehearsals as we would like to.
