In October 2010, Blackshaw secured the contract to adapt the first of Mervyn Peake’s classic Gormenghast series, Titus Groan, for the stage. We have been working on the script for almost a year now, and are ready for the first public viewing. This WeFund project will allow us to host a reading of extracts from our script on 6th October 2011. Not only will this reading be a vital part in the script’s final development ahead of the full run (March 2012), but 100 years after his birth, it will be an event to celebrate the centenary of Mervyn Peake; poet, illustrator, playwright and visionary creator of Gormenghast. The reading will allow the writers to hear their work read by professional actors, in St Pancras Parish Church, a setting that echoes the grandeur and ritual of Gormenghast. There will be a reception after the reading where the writers can chat with the audience, actors, and crew; gathering valuable feedback on the script before it enters the final editing stage. We’ve been fundraising for the Gormenghast project since its inception, by holding themed fundraisers, as well as putting the income from our monthly New Writing Nights towards the production. We are however, running the company independently, and need your help.We believe in our work, and the original text. Gormenghast is a true modern classic with a cult following and we are determined for the script to do the book, and Mervyn Peake’s fans, justice."Having dramatised Mervyn Peake, I understand the challenges that his books present to the playwright. I am hugely excited by the enthusiastic way Blackshaw are responding to those challenges and I am following the progress of their Titus Groan with great anticipation."- Brian Sibley, writer of The History of Titus Groan, Radio 4 Classic Serial, 2011.What is Gormenghast? The Gormenghast series, or Titus books, written by artist, author and poet Mervyn Peake, are set in a timeless world with a rigid class structure, thousands of age old traditions, and one ambitious kitchen boy. Titus Groan tells the first part of the story; the birth of Gormenghast’s heir, the descent of the Earl into madness, and Steerpike, a kitchen boy determined to better himself at all costs and who by doing so shakes Gormenghast to its very core.Filled with rich characters, detailed description and vivid imagery - the Gormenghast series is ripe for a new theatrical interpretation. Casting the Gormenghast: Titus Groan Reading
Posted on 27/09/2011I am relishing the opportunity to really gain some experience in casting, and frankly it seems I needed it! I am a budding theatre producer and part of the Stage One Apprentice Scheme as well as working with Blackshaw. Casting fourteen characters was perhaps a baptism of fire; unfortunately the Muppets were unavailable so we have in vited back some old Blackshaw friends and set about making some new ones through Casting Call Pro. I am immensely flattered and overwhelmed by the amount of applicants we have received. Quite how to choose who to see is an enormous challenge, mainly undertaken by myself and Ellie on Tuesday evening at a long and ice-cream bereft meeting. Now I (with the invaluable help of writer and technical wizard Richard Stratton) have contacted some of the applicants to come and meet myself and Ellie at an informal audition on Saturday afternoon. Scheduling everyone around their shifts giving open-top bus tours and matinee performances has been quite a logistical challenge but I am pleased to report that most people have been really co-operative. Fingers crossed we will meet some lovely people – I am somewhat daunted by the idea of it at the moment as I have only ever been to three auditions and never on the production side of the table! I am sure I will learn a lot, as I always do, from Ellie’s guidance. Next week I will write a little blog introducing you to the cast, if I can. But there is so much to do! If nothing else, I must buy an outfit for our 50s flashback. Even the keenest budding producers must still let their hair down, surely?

We made it to Wefund
Posted on 02/09/2011It's been a long fortnight of filming, and writing copy, and designing posters, and making email lists. Lots of lists. But we are really, very, happy to have our very own WeFund campaign up and running. Rumour has it, that the hardest bit is to come; promoting the project. For now though, I feel we've had…dare I say it…fun, putting the thing together. I've always had a morbid fear of cameras - for the main part, it's being in front of them that worries me. Particularly when there's a red, blinking light, judging you. This filming experience, though, was entirely different - it was with a bunch of people I thoroughly enjoy spending my time with (some would say too much time), and we were speaking about something we a) really believe in and b) get serious joy, thrills, satisfaction (and other good words), from working on. Plus, the camera we used didn't have a blinking red light.
