Whoop ‘n’ Wail Theatre Company in association with Women in Prison present the World Premiѐre of:

eXclusion

by

Ali Kemp & Deborah Klayman

When three women compete for release from prison, who should have the final say? The courts, the press, or the public? Tonight they discover their fate. Two will stay, one will go - who will get your vote?

Set in a women’s prison somewhere in the UK, eXclusion explores the reality of the criminal justice system through the relationships and experiences of three women. Surprisingly funny and moving, eXclusion uses live action, film and original music; showcasing the talents of a number of emerging artists.

Unwittingly the three women are placed at the centre of a reality show in which our audience will get the final say on their destiny. Telephone lines are crashing under the weight of people eagerly voting for reality TV, yet do they place just one vote for the people who will govern their lives? eXclusion brings society’s current obsession with celebrity culture into the theatre, highlighting the very real situation of women incarcerated today.

With a number of damning reports about existing institutions and debates about punishment versus rehabilitation in the media, we ask who is best placed to make the decisions that massively impact these women’s lives – the courts, the press or the public? If you are given the power to release one of these women, who will get your vote?

The Company
We founded Whoop ‘n’ Wail in January 2011, and have had a very busy year so far! eXclusion is our debut production, and in addition to co-writing the play we have taken on the task of raising the funds to produce it. Our company was founded with the intention of creating original drama which addresses issues surrounding incarceration, mental health and social justice. We aim to take our work to the widest possible audience and engage them directly.

Your Donation
eXclusion will première at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is produced in association with UK charity Women in Prison. We have invested personally in the project, covering the venue costs (£3500) but still need to raise £2000 to cover the costs of rehearsing, staging and publicising the production.

We are a new company, yet have already forged some fantastic links with charities and likeminded groups. This production already has a life beyond the festival, with performances scheduled at one of the country’s leading arts venues, which we are looking to develop into a UK tour. Help us realise our show’s full potential and make Edinburgh the springboard for the company’s ongoing success.

Many thanks,

Ali & Deborah

2 days of WeFund to go

Posted on 04/08/2011

Well it has been a busy few days for us Whoop 'n' Wailers. A highlight has been to be featured on Public Reviews - check out my previous blog post. Paul has been in Edinburgh to kick off another show that he has directed - South Hill Park's One Fine Day (check this out if you are coming to Edinburgh) and so Jennifer, Debs and Ali have been rehearsing without him and are looking forward to showing him the fruit of their work on his return on Sunday. Ali has got the programme off the the printers. It is packed with info about the show, the company, ways to get involved with campaigns run by Women In Prison and the Prison Reform Trust as well as ads for some great organisations. Thank you to International House Trust Ltd for sponsoring this. Debs has been feverishly editing the voiceovers and Rakesh has been finishing the fantastic opening sequence for eXclusion. With two days to go on our WeFund project we are delighted with the pledges that we have received so far. We really hope that with your help we can get to our target amount. This is so important to us because with your support we can pay for a rehearsal space, which is already booked for next week and although we have made a great start in our front rooms, Debs' cat Lena, is just a little too keen to join in on the action! Please spread the word and help us to reach our target in the next 48 hours. Big love to you all. x

We're getting there!

Posted on 31/07/2011

First and foremost a big thank you to all those who have so far pledged to fund eXclusion. With just 6 days and 11 hours left of our WeFund project, all those who wish to support eXclusion but just haven't got around to it yet, remember that all pledges, no matter how small, will add up to one great piece of theatre. 'So how is the show coming along?' we hear you cry. Well, due to the generosity of our team, who are all giving their time for free, all the pieces of the jigsaw are coming together beautifully. Paul, Jennifer, Debs and Ali have been busy rehearsing (in the slightly cramped conditions of Ali's front room - please help us fund a rehearsal space). Rakesh is putting the finishing touches to our films, which already look fantastic. Mirja has created yet another piece of original music and Stewart is creating more design magic for our poster. With two weeks to go until Paul, Jennifer, Debs and Ali pile into the car and head up north, there is much work to be done, but we are loving it and can't wait go get this show on the road.
