The beautiful Beatrice-Joanna has fallen in love with Alsemero - there is just one problem – she is already engaged to Alonzo. The disfigured servant Deflores would do anything for Beatrice, even commit murder if he must, but little does Beatrice know the price she must pay in granting his reward.
First seen in 1622, Middleton and Rowley’s visceral play explores the turmoil and destructive nature of sexual obsession. Transcending social divides and overturning prejudice, it ultimately becomes a warped but moving love story. It’s amazing how far the human condition is led when desire possesses the body and mind.
Directed by Michael Oakley, winner of the prestigious JMK Award for young directors (Edward II, BAC). Michael was Trainee Director in Residence at Chichester Festival Theatre and most recently Associate Director on Trevor Nunn's production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in the West End. He has also worked at The Bush, Shakespeare's Globe and The Old Vic.
Fotini Dimou has worked extensively in the UK, as well as Europe, with major national and commercial Theatre, Opera and Dance companies as both a set and costume designer. Designs for the RSC include: Julius Caesar, The Crucible and The Duchess of Malfi. For the National Theatre costume designs include: Gethsemane, Therese Raquin and The Seagull. Other theatre includes: Sore Throats, Road, The Queen and I (Royal Court); Creditors (Donmar/BAM); The Girl with a Pearl Earring (Theatre Royal Haymarket).
